A man suspected of drink-driving sprayed deodorant into his mouth to try to mask the smell of alcohol, according to authorities.

Sheriff’s deputies stopped 49-year-old Efren Mencia-Ramirez on Saturday after he sped past them on an interstate in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, according to the state newspaper.

According to an incident report, a 12-pack of beer – of which 10 were nearly empty – was found on the floor of his car and Mencia-Ramirez had an open bottle between his legs.

Despite the man’s apparent attempts to bamboozle the deputies by spraying Axe – or Lynx as it is known in the UK – into his mouth as they approached, he was hit with multiple charges including driving under the influence after failing sobriety tests.
